Materials
- A few familiar rhymes or songs the children know
- Optional props such as scarves or finger puppets
Steps
- Begin a well-known rhyme or song with its usual gestures.
- Sing it through once together, inviting movements.
- On the next round, pause before a key word and wait for children to fill it in.
- Celebrate every attempt — a sound, sign, word, or motion all count.
- Repeat favorites, since repetition is how children learn the words.
Variations
- Sing rhymes in children's home languages.
- Let a child choose the next song from picture cards.
Differentiation
- For younger children, focus on motions and repeated refrains.
- For older toddlers, pause more often and invite whole phrases.
Accessibility
- Pair songs with signs and movement so every child can join.
- Use songs from each child's culture and home language.
Safety
- Keep props soft and large; supervise any small items.
