Peekaboo Turn-Taking
A back-and-forth peekaboo game that builds the social turn-taking at the heart of conversation.
Ages 4–24 months
Supports this milestone
- uses non-verbal communication and language to engage others in interaction. — Head Start ELOF
Materials
- A light scarf or small blanket (optional)
- Just your hands and face
Steps
- Cover your face with your hands or a scarf and pause.
- Reveal your face with a warm "Peekaboo!" and watch the child's reaction.
- Pause and wait expectantly for the child to take a turn — a smile, sound, or pull of the scarf.
- Respond to whatever they offer as a real turn, then go again.
- Let the child lead by hiding their own face or starting the game.
Variations
- Hide a toy under the scarf and reveal it together.
- Play with a sibling or another child to widen the circle.
Differentiation
- For young infants, keep the rhythm slow and exaggerate your expressions.
- For older toddlers, add words, "Where did I go? Here I am!"
Accessibility
- Build the game around any signal the child gives, including eye gaze or body movement.
- Use touch and sound cues for children with vision differences.
Safety
- Keep scarves light and never cover the child's face.
