Materials
- A large foam or paper die
- Six picture prompt cards, such as food, pets, weather, family, play, and feelings
Steps
- One child rolls the die and finds the matching prompt card.
- That child shares a sentence about the topic, such as "My favorite food is..."
- The partner responds by asking a related question or adding their own idea.
- Encourage at least three back-and-forth turns before rolling again.
- Practice matching voice to the moment, such as an excited voice for play and a calm voice for rest.
Variations
- Add a "secret" card where partners whisper their turn.
- Play in a small group so a turn passes to the next listener.
Differentiation
- Provide sentence stems and follow-up question cards for children who need support.
- Accept turns given through signs or AAC.
Accessibility
- Use clear, high-contrast picture cards and seat partners face to face.
- Welcome conversation across a child's languages.
Safety
- Use a soft die and keep play seated to avoid bumps.
