Ages 36–60 months
Supports this milestone
- shows understanding of word categories and relationships among words. — Head Start ELOF
Materials
- Picture cards from three categories, such as animals, food, and vehicles
- Category header cards or labeled bins
- A few opposite pairs, such as big and small or up and down
Steps
- Show a card, name it, and ask, "Which group does this belong to?"
- Invite the child to place it under the matching category header.
- Once sorted, ask the child to name a shared trait, such as "Both have wheels."
- Bring out the opposite pairs and ask the child to match each one and name the opposite.
- Challenge older children to list more examples of a category from memory.
Variations
- Use real objects instead of cards for a hands-on sort.
- Add a synonym game, such as matching glad with happy.
Differentiation
- Start with two clearly different categories for children who need an easier entry.
- Accept sorting and naming through pointing, signs, or AAC.
Accessibility
- Use clear, high-contrast images and offer real objects alongside cards.
- Welcome category words in a child's home language.
Safety
- Use sturdy cards or large objects to prevent mouthing of small pieces.
