Activity
Addition Fact Chant
Children chant small addition facts in a steady rhythm, committing them to memory the classical way before practicing them on paper.
Ages 48–78 months
Supports this milestone
- understands addition as adding to and understands subtraction as taking away from. — Head Start ELOF
Materials
- Optional — counters or fingers to check a fact
- Optional — the "Addition Facts to 10 — Practice" worksheet to follow up
Steps
- Clap a steady beat and chant a fact family together, such as "one plus one is two".
- Repeat the same set several times so the rhythm carries the words.
- Pause before the answer and let the children call it out.
- Check one or two facts with counters or fingers so the chant stays meaningful.
- At the end of the week, practice the same facts on the worksheet.
Variations
- Chant the "doubles" (1+1, 2+2, 3+3) or the "plus two" facts.
- Turn it into a call-and-response between two groups.
Differentiation
- For beginners, chant only three facts and keep counters handy.
- For confident children, ask them to chant the matching subtraction fact too.
Accessibility
- Pair each fact with finger or counter actions for children who learn through movement.
- Keep chants short and predictable to support every learner.
Safety
- None — this is an oral, seated or circle-time activity.
