Activity
Numeral and Count Match Cards
Children match numeral cards 0 to 5 to sets of objects and trace the numerals.
Ages 36–60 months
Supports this milestone
- associates a quantity with written numerals up to 5 and begins to write numbers. — Head Start ELOF
Materials
- Index cards labeled with numerals 0 through 5
- A bowl of small counters, such as buttons, pom-poms, or pebbles
- A tray of sand, salt, or shaving cream for tracing
- Crayons and paper for children ready to write numerals
Steps
- Point to a numeral card and name it together.
- Invite the child to place that many counters below the card.
- Count the counters back to check they match the numeral.
- Have the child trace the numeral in the sand tray with a finger.
- Repeat with other cards, letting the child choose which to do next.
- Offer paper and ask: can you make some marks to show how many?
Variations
- Hide a numeral card and ask the child to build the set from memory.
- Use tally marks or drawn dots instead of counters to record the amount.
Differentiation
- For younger children, work only with numerals 0 to 3.
- For older children, extend to numerals up to 10 and have them write the numeral.
Accessibility
- Provide raised or sandpaper numerals for tactile learners.
- Allow tracing in a tray for children still developing pencil control.
Safety
- Supervise so small counters are not mouthed by younger children.
