Ages 36–66 months
Supports this milestone
- demonstrates control, strength, and coordination of large muscles. — Head Start ELOF
Materials
- A rope, chalk line, or low plank to balance along
- Flat markers or chalk circles for hopping spots
- Two or three soft beanbags
- A bucket, hoop, or chalk target to throw into
Steps
- Lead the children heel-to-toe along the balance line with arms out.
- At the markers, invite each child to hop from spot to spot on one or two feet.
- At the throwing spot, model an overhand toss of a beanbag into the target.
- Let each child take several throws, stepping closer if needed for success.
- Send the children back through the course as a loop, taking turns.
Variations
- Add a "wobbly log" by using a real low log or balance beam in a forest setting.
- Turn it into a nature hunt where each station ends at a found leaf or stone.
Differentiation
- For beginners, widen the line, let them hop with two feet, and shorten the throw.
- For advanced children, narrow the beam, ask for single-foot hops, and move the target back.
Safety
- Clear the area of trip hazards, keep the balance surface low, and use soft beanbags.
- Space children out so they do not collide while hopping or throwing.
