Activity
Drop, Stack, and Fit
An infant or toddler practices hand-eye coordination by dropping objects into a container, stacking cups or blocks, and fitting large pieces together.
Ages 8–30 months
Supports this milestone
- coordinates hand and eye movements to perform actions. — Head Start ELOF
Materials
- A wide-mouth container or bowl
- Several large blocks, stacking cups, or rings
- A few large pom-poms or soft balls too big to swallow
- An optional simple chunky-piece puzzle
Steps
- Show the child how to pick up one object and drop it into the container.
- Let the child fill and empty the container at their own pace.
- Move to stacking, building a short tower of cups or blocks together.
- Invite the child to knock it down and rebuild, watching where each piece goes.
- If using a puzzle, hand over one piece at a time to fit into its space.
Variations
- Use a container with a smaller opening to increase the aiming challenge.
- Thread large-holed beads onto a stiff cord for a fitting variation.
Differentiation
- For younger infants, use a very wide bowl and large, easy-to-grip objects.
- For older toddlers, ask for a taller tower or add a sorting step by color.
Accessibility
- Use larger, high-contrast pieces and a non-slip tray for children with visual or motor differences.
- Stabilize the container and bead cord so the child can focus on placement.
Safety
- Use objects too large to swallow and supervise to prevent mouthing of small parts.
