Supports this milestone
- uses perceptual information to guide motions and interactions with objects and other people. — Head Start ELOF
Materials
- A few cones, chairs, or hoops as markers
- An open indoor or outdoor space
- Optional soft ball for the kicking station
Steps
- Call out a position cue, such as "stand behind a cone" or "sit beside a hoop."
- Let the children find a spot and check their position against the marker.
- Mix in movement cues, such as "walk to a new cone and change direction halfway."
- At the ball station, ask each child to move into position to kick the ball toward a target.
- Pause now and then to notice who is keeping a safe bubble from others.
Variations
- Play a freeze version where children move, then freeze in the named position.
- Turn it into a follow-the-leader path through the markers.
Differentiation
- For children who need support, demonstrate each position and pair them with a partner.
- For a challenge, chain two cues together, such as "go behind a cone, then beside a friend."
Accessibility
- Use floor markers and clear spoken cues for children who benefit from visual or verbal structure.
- Offer seated or partner-supported versions for children with mobility differences.
Safety
- Space markers widely and remind children to watch for others to avoid collisions.
- Use a soft ball and keep the area clear of trip hazards.
