Ages 24–48 months
Supports this milestone
- compares and categorizes observable phenomena. — Head Start ELOF
- uses matching and sorting of objects or people to understand similar and different characteristics. — Head Start ELOF
Materials
- A basket of clean socks in three or four distinct colors
- Three or four bins or hoops to sort into
Steps
- Show the child one sock and name its color.
- Invite the child to find the bin "where this color lives."
- Let the child continue sorting the rest of the basket at their own pace.
- When finished, count how many socks are in each bin together.
Variations
- Sort by size instead of color for an added challenge.
- Add a "mystery sock" of a new color and ask where it should go.
Differentiation
- For younger children, start with just two colors.
- For older children, sort by two attributes (color and size).
Accessibility
- Offer socks with distinct textures or patterns alongside color.
Safety
- Use only clean, child-safe socks; supervise to prevent mouthing of small items.
