Ages 4–24 months
Supports this milestone
- shows awareness about self and how to connect with others. — Head Start ELOF
Materials
- A large unbreakable mirror
- A soft mat
Steps
- Sit with the child facing the mirror and point to their reflection.
- Touch and name body parts gently, for example "these are your hands."
- Wiggle fingers and toes together and watch the reflection move.
- Name yourself and the child to mark "you" and "me."
- Follow the child's gaze and label whatever draws their interest.
Variations
- Add a peer to the mirror and name both children.
- Play this during dressing routines, naming parts as you go.
Differentiation
- For infants, keep to a few parts and slow, repetitive naming.
- For toddlers, ask "where is your nose?" and let them point.
Accessibility
- For children with vision differences, emphasize touch and naming over the reflection.
- Adapt for motor differences by gently guiding the child's hands to each part.
Safety
- Use a shatterproof mirror secured so it cannot tip onto the child.
