Materials
- A small sturdy photo book of the child's family and familiar people
Steps
- Sit close with the child and open their family book together.
- Point to and name each person, for example "there is your grandma."
- Pause to let the child point to or name people they recognize.
- Talk about recent family moments, such as a visit or a meal together.
- Let the child turn the pages and revisit favorite photos.
Variations
- Add photos of pets, home, or familiar routines.
- Display the books on a low shelf so children can revisit them anytime.
Differentiation
- For younger toddlers, keep books to a few key people.
- For older toddlers, ask them to talk about a family member who is not present.
Accessibility
- Use clear, high-contrast photos and name people aloud for children with vision differences.
- Honor every family structure; the child's real people are always the content.
Safety
- Use sturdy, child-safe books with no loose small parts.
