Materials

  • A favorite toy
  • A light scarf or towel
  • A small, safe container with a loose lid

Steps

  • Show the child the toy and let them want it, without handing it over.
  • Wait and watch as the child tries to reach it, offering quiet encouragement.
  • Resist solving it too fast; let the child experiment with pulling the scarf or opening the lid.
  • If the child stays stuck, model one small hint, then return the problem to them.
  • Cheer the strategy, not just the result, such as "You pulled the scarf to bring it close."

Variations

  • Put the toy inside a container with a lid the child must remove.
  • Set the toy under a low table so the child must crawl or reach around.

Differentiation

  • For younger children, leave the scarf almost in their hand.
  • For older toddlers, add a second step, such as opening a lid then pulling a string.

Accessibility

  • Use a toy that makes noise or has high contrast to keep the goal motivating.

Safety

  • Keep scarves short and supervise closely; never leave a child alone with loose fabric.
