Materials

  • 3 to 5 photos of steps in a familiar routine (wash hands, sit down, eat, clear plate)
  • Optional ring or board to hold the cards in order

Steps

  • Look at the first card together and name what is happening.
  • Ask, "What do we do next?" and let the child recall before turning the card.
  • Move through the cards, letting the child lead as much as possible.
  • During the real routine later, glance at the cards to confirm the child's memory.
  • Celebrate when the child anticipates a step on their own.

Variations

  • Mix up two cards and ask the child to put them back in the right order.
  • Use the cards to talk about a routine from earlier in the day.

Differentiation

  • For younger toddlers, use just two cards for a two-step routine.
  • For older toddlers, leave a card out and ask what is missing.

Accessibility

  • Pair each photo with a spoken word or sign for children who are not yet matching pictures.

Safety

  • Use sturdy, laminated or thick cards with no sharp edges.
