How Will You Reach It?
A toddler figures out how to reach a desired object placed up high, planning to fetch a sturdy stool or stack a support.
Ages 18–36 months
Supports this milestone
- uses reasoning and planning ahead to solve problems. — Head Start ELOF
Materials
- A favorite book or toy
- A low, sturdy step stool or stable box
- A safe, padded floor area
Steps
- Show the child the object on the shelf and invite them to get it.
- Let the child try on tiptoes first, then pause and wonder, "What could help you reach?"
- Watch the child notice and bring the stool, offering hints only if needed.
- Stand close to spot the child as they step up safely.
- Talk through the plan together, such as "You brought the stool so you could reach."
Variations
- Set out two objects so the child plans to make two trips.
- Add a turn-taking version where two children plan how to share one stool.
Differentiation
- For younger toddlers, place the stool right beside the shelf as a strong cue.
- For older toddlers, place the stool across the room so they must plan to fetch it.
Accessibility
- Offer a ramp or sturdy push handle for children who do not climb steps.
Safety
- Use only a low, stable stool on a padded surface and stay within arm's reach to spot the child.
