Activity
Snack-Time Choice Requests
A child requests a desired snack or toy by gesture, sign, or word, building intentional communication of wants.
Ages 9–30 months
Supports this milestone
- communicates needs and wants non-verbally and by using language. — Head Start ELOF
Materials
- Two snack or toy options the child likes
- A tray or two small bowls to hold the choices
Steps
- Show the two choices and name each one clearly.
- Ask, "Which one do you want?" and wait expectantly.
- Honor any clear signal — a reach, point, sign, or word — by giving that choice.
- Model the word or sign as you hand it over, "Cracker! You wanted the cracker."
- Offer a little more so the child can request again with "more."
Variations
- Use a picture choice board for children who point or use AAC.
- Offer choices during play, such as which toy or which book.
Differentiation
- For beginners, accept any reach or look and name it as a choice.
- For older toddlers, encourage a short phrase, "More juice" or "I want ball."
Accessibility
- Treat picture exchange, signs, and AAC selections as full requests.
- For dual language learners, accept the word in either language.
Safety
- Check for food allergies and offer only safe, appropriately sized bites.
