Materials

  • Two snack or toy options the child likes
  • A tray or two small bowls to hold the choices

Steps

  • Show the two choices and name each one clearly.
  • Ask, "Which one do you want?" and wait expectantly.
  • Honor any clear signal — a reach, point, sign, or word — by giving that choice.
  • Model the word or sign as you hand it over, "Cracker! You wanted the cracker."
  • Offer a little more so the child can request again with "more."

Variations

  • Use a picture choice board for children who point or use AAC.
  • Offer choices during play, such as which toy or which book.

Differentiation

  • For beginners, accept any reach or look and name it as a choice.
  • For older toddlers, encourage a short phrase, "More juice" or "I want ball."

Accessibility

  • Treat picture exchange, signs, and AAC selections as full requests.
  • For dual language learners, accept the word in either language.

Safety

  • Check for food allergies and offer only safe, appropriately sized bites.
