Materials

  • Printed photos of familiar people, pets, and places
  • A simple homemade photo book or sturdy album
  • Optional cards with familiar logos or signs

Steps

  • Open the book and point to a familiar face, naming the person.
  • Ask, "Who is that?" and wait for the child to point, sign, or name.
  • Celebrate each recognition and add a little more, "Yes, that's Grandma!"
  • Show a familiar logo or sign and talk about where they have seen it.
  • For older toddlers, point to the first letter of the child's name.

Variations

  • Make a photo book of classroom friends and look at it together.
  • Take a neighborhood walk and spot familiar signs and logos.

Differentiation

  • For younger children, use a few large, clear photos of closest people.
  • For older toddlers, introduce naming letters in their own name.

Accessibility

  • Use large, high-contrast images and tactile symbols for children with vision differences.
  • Accept signs, vocalizations, or AAC selections as recognition.

Safety

  • Use sturdy pages or laminated photos that withstand handling and mouthing.
