Skill
Recognizes Pictures and Symbols
Child recognizes pictures and some symbols, signs, letters, or words.
Ages 4–36 months
Why it matters
Understanding that a picture, logo, sign, or letter stands for something real is the root of symbolic thinking and print awareness. Recognizing familiar images and the first letters of one's name opens the door to reading and writing.
